Thank you to Sarah for informing me about this. Coty has purchased OPI, one of the most popular nail polish lines in North America, for what is rumored to be more than one billion dollars. I have been a very loyal fan of OPI for many, many years now, but I do not purchase anything made by Coty. Why? Because Coty still practices inhumane and cruel animal testing. I am obviously very unhappy about this; I was really, really hoping it wouldn't happen. OPI has never tested on animals, so I was hoping that those morals would carry through and they would refuse a deal by a company that is known to perform tests on animals. I love OPI polishes, but I also really liked Essie polishes before they were purchased by L'Oreal (I have not purchased Essie since). I refuse to give money to a company that tortures and kills innocent animals. The price of beauty should never be that high.
Zoya and China Glaze are both popular polish brands that DO NOT test on animals. Orly and SpaRitual are also cruelty-free (thanks MightyLambchop!).

I'm really am annoyed about this, OPI is the only brand I use.. They could have sold to someone who didn't test on animals if they really cared, guess not.
I'll be trying Zoya, China Glaze, and I believe Essie doesn't test on animals, right?

Its a sad day for OPI!
I was the anon poster, I was just too lazy to log in!
I won't be buying Opi anymore. Even if they remain cruelty free, which they claim they will, part of their profits will go to Coty, who is not cruelty free.
Opi was great because of the combination of their colors, formula, brush, and being 3free and cruelty free. Take any one of those away and you no longer have a 1 up over competing brands in the same market.
So, sorry Opi, you lost a dedicated customer, but congrats to China Glaze, whose business I bet will sky rocket.
What really bugs me about this is that the buy out was due to pure greed. Opi had stated that their business had rapidly expanded and that they were doing great. If they were not in need of the money, why compromise their values with the acquisition. Beauty comes at a price, but this is not a price I am willing to pay.
This sucks the big one.... O.P.I is one of my favs too.. I saw the post by OPI on FB yesterday and it bummed me out. But you'd think since O.P.I managed to make wonderful nail polish w/o testing on animals that Coty would be able to manage that too...
Jessica, Essie is owned by L'Oreal now, and they test on animals, unfortunately. But China Glaze and Zoya are both cruelty-free.

I love your blog, It's kept me entertained many-a-times at work during slow times. I guess it is time to say "Hi," and should have done so sooner, but obviously I am often too lazy to log in:)
Let Them Have Polish, I hope Coty keeps distributing OPI without starting a testing policy for OPI products, but since they are owned by Coty, money that goes to OPI goes to a company that tests on animals :(

First L'Oreal buys Essie and The Body Shop, and now Coty buys OPI and will soon purchase philosophy. These smaller companies build their reputation on being cruelty-free only to sell out to the highest bidder, regardless of their ethical practices. This stinks.

i didn't even think about that when I heard all the rumors about COTY wanting to purchase OPI. That sucks.
I didnt realise Essie had been sold to L'Oreal! So now OPI and Essie wont be getting my business! Shame really
If they start to lose buyers maybe they'll open their eyes and stop testing on animals! Don't ever lose hope!

I'm super put out too as I like OPI and I like Nicole by OPI I'm also wondering how this affects the SOPIs which are some of my favourites. Though there are a bunch of other brands that don't test on animals either like Misa, Wet n' Wild and Revlon apolish and I'm fairly sure (but not certain) Color Club. Nubar is a great brand that is cruelty-free and vegan too! I'm almost positive finger paints is non-animal testing as well. It's frustrating that there is so much out there that can be created without harming animals (or humans) and yet cosmetics are still tested on animals. *sigh* Anyways, thanks for your comment on my blog :D
Hebridean, I'm pretty put out too. I love OPI... but I don't love Coty. Not sure about $OPI - I always forget about those. I forgot about Revlon and Wet n' Wild. I don't know much about Color Club or Nubar (never used Nubar, actually) - I'll have to try that. I agree - it is frustrating, especially in 2010. I did a project about this when I was like, 11 or something. Nearly 14 years later it is still a huge problem...

Can't their be any 'small' companies anymore (if OPI could have even been considered 'small')? I've missed you - I hope all is well for you.

I had no idea so many companies were still testing on animals. I went through the list, and there are a lot of stuff I use in my house to clean, and I'm really bummed out that I got so accustomed to using them because I will most likely not buy from them again. I'm really not a happy camper when it comes to animal testing for cosmetics. I, too, had to do a project in 9th grade on this topic, as a debate, and I was one of the against. I learned so much of what they're doing, and what sort of alternatives they can try instead of harming these poor animals, that I can't understand why it's still done.. Horrible...
I don't have any OPI, but I have a Nicole. I don't plan on buying any more, that's for sure.

Oh, shit. Oh well, I don't often buy OPI as they have few colours that appeal to me. I didn't like a single Burlesque one, for example (don't burn me please!). I didn't know that about Essie though, I'm a bit upset about that. Again, not many of their colours appeal to me but they seem to be a brand that when they do colours I like, I love them (Sew Psyched, Turquoise & Caicos). Happily China Glaze and Zoya are my favourites, so I'll stick with them from now on.

They WILL stay cruelty free, but that's a non-issue any any profit goes to Coty, who still tests on animals. Anyone you buy OPI you are supporting Coty.

Kalee, I think OPI will keep their policy, I just wish Coty would stop all animal testing as well, since like the anonymous poster pointed out, any money we give to OPI goes to Coty now :(
GabZ, I know, it is truly shocking, isn't it?? I'm so glad you're so aware of the policies and procedures too - you really can never think of those companies the same again after you learn what they do.
Jenny, I completely agree - for us animal lovers (and really, anyone with some morals - this is just a barbaric practice) animal testing is heartbreaking. It shocks me it still exists today.
Smootchie, in regard to that post, Coty DOES, unfortunately, test on animals. They use careful phrasing to make it sound like they don't always, but yes, Coty tests on animals. If you look in the comments section of that post, you can see my response. I have written to them numerous times before asking them to stop, but, because animal testing is cheap, companies like Coty, P&G, and L'Oreal continue to do it.
Sux. I guess I'll use what I have and won't be purchasing any more. It today's day and age with techonology being where it is there is absolutely no reason in the world for any company to test on animals! Bye bye OPI!
I was already swearing off OPI because of their attitude towards e-tailers but this seals the deal entirely. I WILL NOT support any kind of animal testing. Period. I'm getting angry just writing this!! I'm so glad I stopped in on your blog today to check things out because I've learned a lot from you guys. I didn't realize P&G and L'oreal did animal testing. I've never been a big L'oreal/Lancome buyer but I will definitely not start now.
I'll also pass this on among all my nail polish addicted friends. We have a voice people, it's called the all mighty dollar. Please spend it where it doesn't hurt!
There are lots of great polishes out there that don't stoop to cruelty. I can get great colors elsewhere, OPI doesn't have the only good polish or selection. I assume this will also apply to Nicole as they are OPI, aren't they?

Super sad. I've stopped purchasing Essie since they sold out to L'Oreal (and their polish formula was inconsistent anyway.) But OPI? C'mon, they did it for pure greed. Damn Suzi. I'm so so disappointed in her for selling out. Looks like it's going to be strictly GC, Zoya, and Color Club (unless they test. Not quite sure.)
