Lately I have been obsessed with ombre cakes - especially PINK ombre cakes. Ombre hair... not so much (although I am, unfortunately, kind of sporting that look right now). But ombre cakes are just SO CUTE! Who doesn't want to cut into a colorful and fabulous cake? I especially love the unassuming white cakes - that makes the ombre surprise even better! (The sprinkle cakes are also too cute).
How awesome are these?
To make your own ombre cake, follow the directions for a basic yellow cake mix. Pour 1/3 (or 1/5, if using two cake mixes) into a round cake pan, then add a small amount of food dye or natural dyes (beet root or pureed strawberries) to the remaining cake mix. Pour an equal amount into a second pan, and then add more dye, making a deeper pink layer. Pour that into the third pan. (Continue this same way if making five layers). Bake as directed, allow to cool, and remove from pan. Once cool, carefully even out cake layers using a knife to achieve flat layers. Arrange from lightest to darkest, using a white frosting or meringue between layers. Frost and serve. How awesome would it be to cut into this fun ombre surprise?
